Questions About The First Essay

1  What was your main point (thesis)? my moral was that all people don't learn the same way.

2.   Who was your audience? my audience was my family and my teacher Sonia Begert. I tailored it by adding story like elements rather than just stating the facts which made it much more interesting.

3.   What feedback or reactions did you get at various times while composing this paper, I mostly got feedback on adding more details or make the story come to life more. i was able to make use of this by adding more details.

4.      What did you find interesting about the process you went through in writing this paper, and what did you learn from it? i learned that if i give my story more details your audience is able to understand the story better.
5.      What questions do you have for me about the paper?  (What part(s) of the paper would you like me to focus on?  What do you see as the paper’s strengths, and what areas are you unsure of?) i think that i did quite good job making sure the reader was able to understand the story, and follow along with the story.

Class Lab 10/27/15

The Apple Company created this ad for family-oriented and the general consumers. We can tell that this ad is written for a general audience because there are not many specifics details on a certain group. But the apple ad’s background can be interpreted as a father and son’s conversation about their most recent fishing trip.  The purpose of this ad to emulate the fact that the iPhone is easier to operate than the other competitors. Apple is trying to relate the simplicity of the IPhone through the ad

1. The whole message is short and to the point. “Keeping in contact has never been so easy/ Facetime, message, or call your friends quickly and easily.

2. The message in itself is very simple and self-explanatory, making it easy for anyone to read and comprehend.

3. Apple uses words such as, “easy” and “quickly” to appeal to the general audience because people like things simple and easy instead of complicated. Reiterate “easy” twice in the ad. (Apple ad).

(3. How is it working? )

A Summary of Melissa Rubins Essay, Advertisements R US.
Advertisements are meant to persuade us to buy a certain product. Coca Cola produced an advertisement during the 1950’s that reflected the mainstream stereotypes. The author writes about a crowd of people in front of a large vending machine and how it consists of all white working class men.
These men are represented by blue collar workers, service men, and men in business suits, to show the patriotism that had developed during the war.  The image is underscoring the values that Americans had at that time. A crowd of people are working together as a community. There is no longer any conflict among the people and they are all working together to unite and build industrial America.
The group is invited by the giant face of a sprite boy to refresh themselves with Coca Cola.  The pixie is at the top of the picture in the bright blue sky with clouds as though he was a god. A powerful force combined with the enormous red vending machine which represented the factory. His hand suggests that he is a host offering the community of Americans a refreshment. He is suggesting that when you drink Coke it is uniting Americans in the same way that the war effort did.

Coca Cola ads reflected American values during the 1950’s. They were successful in helping shape the American identity. Americans are happy smiling people who deserve a refreshing break with Coke.

Textual Analysis Paper

1.      The publisher of our first ad about dog fur is from the PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.).Our second ad about Walmart in support of animal cruelty is from Mercy for Animals. Our last ad is a dog adoption ad which is published by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

2.      All these texts are intended for people who have compassion or a love for animals. For example, in the first ad the slogan is “If you wouldn’t wear your dog…please don’t wear any fur.” They are purposefully trying to make people feel compassion for animals that are skinned for fur.

3.      We can tell that the texts are intended for people who have compassion or love for animals because they are all focused on doing the most ethical choice for the animals, while pressuring people into having compassion. For example, in the ad about Animal Cruelty they are blaming Walmart for supporting Animal Cruelty and pressuring you into supporting their side, instead of Walmart. Also in the ad about adopting a dog, it pressures you into compassion for the dog because the ad is narrated from the dog’s point of view, and by relating on a personal level.

4.      The purpose of these texts are persuading you to support their cause or to sway your opinions about something. For the first ad, they are trying to prove and have people in support of equality between all animals. In the second ad the creators are trying to change the way Walmart and other companies treat their animals. In the last ad the creators are trying to persuade you into adopting a dog. All three ads main point is to get you to do something.

5.      The creators of the Walmart ad are trying to make people aware of what they are eating. This causes less amount of people to buy their animal products, which decreases Walmart’s profits, so they hopefully start to make a change. They are working towards their purpose by promoting their issues, and making a voice for themselves. All the ads are trying to address that ethical values trump overall. For example, in the Walmart ad, the makers of the ad are directly accusing Walmart of Animal Cruelty, giving Walmart a bad reputation. This makes people rethink their decisions.

6.      In the Walmart Animal Cruelty ad, it says, “Imagine being crammed inside a medal stall, barely larger than your own body, unable to turn around or lie down comfortably for nearly your entire life. You will never see the sun, breath fresh air, walk, play, or engage in any natural behaviors. This is the daily reality of pigs raised for Walmart’s pork.”

7.      As a group, all the ads inform you of a problem and advise you to take action.

Questions for Melissa Rubin Essay
1.       The insight she offers is that during the 1950’s American’s supported the veterans and that the culture was white male dominated, and that the labor force was working together.  The image shows men in business suits, blue collar workers, and men in uniform all together as a community with smiling faces. Only a few women in are the background wearing dresses.  Yes I have been persuaded to believe that this was true. The image does appear to describe what she is saying.
2.       She incorporates the labor struggles that the unions had, the fact that it was after the war, and that there was an exclusion of any black people. She mentions that Coke did have some famous blacks in other ads. The white men could be working class but the blacks had to be famous.
3.       What do the images symbolize in relation to what the product is offering? Are the images relevant to today’s world?
4.       Pemco Insurance says they are a lot like me. They talk about things that are common with Northwest residents; sandals with socks, goat herd guy, geodesic dome building, and wood carving. This ad is saying we are all unique which encompasses everyone. This is the same as the Coke ad appealing to as many “regular” people as possible. They are both based on stereotypes. They are both portraying the values of the people of the times.

2. Analytical thinking is another way of saying rhetorical thinking. It’s breaking the writing down into parts to better understand the contents of what you read. By breaking down text and phrases we can then figure out where the author stands, author’s point of view, author’s tone and so on. Many stories may hide their meaning but upon deeper analysis we find greater meaning.

4. The “Stay Sweet As You  Are” analysis paper fits the criteria by including the ads that it’s analyzing, breaking down the information in chronological order, and finding the main points of each ad. At the end, all three advertisements are compared and found to have the same main point: “pleasing men is the prerequisite for [a woman’s] happiness.”

5.I gathered form my group that thinking analytically is the same as thinking rhetorically

Narrative 101
I learned to read using a series of books about natural science. The series started with large bold type and simple words. Each sequential book increased in difficulty. The stories became more complex as the writing became smaller and the illustrations more ornate. It gave me a wealth of knowledge about all kinds of interesting animal behaviors and facts. I knew about owls, raptors, snakes, insects, reptiles, and amphibians. The books had unique and interesting tidbits of information that I shared with my friend George.
George and I got together every week while our older siblings attended a class together. They were learning about Biology. George’s grandfather was a scientist so he knew all about that type of information. He was well skilled and offered to teach all the older kids. The books they had were very thick and they talked about scientific terms that we did not understand, they would dissect different dead things that had been ordered through a special Home school magazine. The formaldehyde took our breath away when the plastic wrappers came off the preserved creatures. We were happy to get out of there giving them the quiet that they needed. As a home school family, we were accustomed to having classes that were divided between the older and younger students. George was horrified by all the guts strewn across the table on those days and was more than happy to leave as quickly as possible. We obediently went outside about our business of playing, leaving the older kids to their studies.
Frequently, George would be finishing a beginning reading lesson when I came in the door. George sat slumped in the straight backed chair as his mother systematically pointed at words sounding out each syllable with her mouth. His low voice croaked out noises as he struggled to repeat the words. He stared at the page with his round eyes half shut, his shoulders curved forward as if becoming part of the table, his fair hair blended into his kaki colored shirt. His mother finally released him so we could play outside in the woods to climb trees and play in the creek. The house was at the top of a hill. A gentle slope led down to mossy alder trees leaning in toward a small trickle of water rimmed with huge clumps of ferns. We spent all of our time together watching the insects, animals, and birds that visited the muddy edge. We studied the little foot prints and tried to determine who had made them. George was particularly interested in the Damselflies. One landed on a fallen log. Its slim body covered with iridescent wings shimmered in the filtered light. Pin-sized legs clung to the spongy bark. “That Damselfly is a male because he is more brightly colored.” I told George. He leaned forward with his stocky body, “How did you know that?” he asked. “I learned about them in my reading books. The eggs are laid in the soggy logs and then they hatch into nymphs. The nymphs molt repeatedly until they undergo metamorphosis.” George clung to every word I said. I continued, “The skin splits down the back, and they emerge and inflate their wings and abdomen to turn into their adult form.” George’s eyes grew large and his mouth dropped open. “You learn that in your reading books!” George chirped with excitement. ”I will bring you the first book next week. It is the one with the Damselfly story.” I said.
His mother loomed like a shadow over the table as George grappled with the words. “The  b..b..box is on the h..h..hill.”  His large eyes looked hazy as I watched him glance to the side watching a fly bang repeatedly against the window pane. George’s round face transformed as he noticed that I had slipped quietly in the door. “Did you bring the book?” George piped. I pulled the first book of the series with the large type out from behind my back as though it was a surprise. He leaped up from the chair which fell backward crashing to the floor. “Please be careful George!” his mother screeched. “Sorry”, he said apologetically and clumsily tucked the chair under the table. He didn’t run out the door as usual. He grabbed my hand and pulled me over to plunk down on an oversized faded couch where he eagerly started leafing through the pages of the book until locating the picture of the Damselfly. “There it is with an illustration of the life-cycle.”, he said as his mother stepped back. He was glued to the page. Together we examined each stage of the nymph as it metamorphosed into adulthood.  He was quite content as we sat elbow to elbow slowly and carefully progressing from chapter to chapter. “I will leave this book with you. I finished it and don’t really need it anymore. So, you just go ahead and keep it if you like.” I said. He was engrossed in the illustrations, scrutinizing every detail so I didn’t disturb him as I slipped out the door.
George’s mother was radiant when I arrived the next time. Her head moved up and down with approval as George moved along with the story, “It sw..swims in fr..fr…esh water.” His eyes were wide open and he was sitting straight up in the chair. “That book was really great!” George’s mother with a very happy tone in her voice. “He read the whole thing from front to back.” “I brought the next one, but it might take a little more time because it has a lot bigger words” I said. “You need to go out to play you have been sitting at this table a long time.” George’s mother said coaxingly. I never thought George would need encouragement to go outside. I guess he had worked very hard to read the whole book before I had arrived. Out the back door we headed down the hill for our usual jaunt in the woods. This week’s adventure George and I headed farther back through the boggy valley. The earthy moist air was perfumed with skunk cabbage. Small birds fluttered their wings above our heads. Squirrels made scolding noises as they clung to trees on opposite sides of the creek.  I carefully lifted my feet high above the sedge grass so my shoes would not get wet. George didn’t seem to care about wet feet. He tromped through the mud unaware of his feet, totally focused on the treasures we would find along the way. “What’s that?” he exclaimed. A clear, gelatinous, glob floated in a puddle. Each bubble had a dark center with a small curled comma shape. “Those are frog eggs”, I said. “The frogs hatch out into tadpoles which swim like fish until they develop legs. Then they become official frogs.” George was flabbergasted. It was as though I had told him about something that was impossible. “You are making that up, don’t tease me like that”, he said. “I am not making it up. It is in the second reader. You will see”.

When I arrived the following week there was George sitting on the oversized, sun-bleached couch reading to his little sister. Her eyes looked up admiringly as he explained about the tadpoles.  His lime green sweater reflected brightly against his face. When he spotted me, he hopped up leaving his sister to look at the pictures. “I read about frogs today. You were right. They do start out like fish. Did you bring the next book?” Yes I had.

class lab for comparisons

This is what would be better for each web site https://www.zagat.com/r/grill-23-bar-boston http://www.opentable.com/ grill-23-and-bar

https://www.zagat.com/r/grill-23-bar-boston  had a better rating system and they explained it better. they also gave the cost and the summary of the restaurant in a paragraph

http://www.opentable.com/ grill-23-and-bar gave a star rating for each restaurant instead of explaining the rating system like Zagat

They both gave maps and a lot of reviews for each  restaurant they also gave a in depth description of each restaurant. in Conclusion i found that Zagat was better.

Mad Men a Stillbirth of the american dream

Mad Men a Stillbirth of the american dream

Heather Havrilesky's main insight came on page 175 with Matthew Weiner's telling, (the birth of the advertising age coincides directly with the birth of discontent as a nation-and what got lost in the hustle was our souls).this is her main insight because it was hinted at in the beginning on page 171 she said that (somehow mad men captures this ultra mediated, postmodern moment, underscoring the disconnect between the american dream and realty by distilling our deep-seated frustrations as a nation into painfully palpable vignettes.) she tells us that she is the critic at salon. She also tells us how america has gotten a sickness of always wanting more and that all Americans are instructed to hope for more, Because we are told repeated stories of the fairest in the land, the richest and the most heroic. She appeals to the readers emotions on page 174 with (the costumes and the props that come with the dream occasionally fail to obscure the confused humans who straiten their shoulders and dry their eyes and take the stage day after day dutifully mouthing lines about the thrills of work and family, all of it invented, peppy rhetoric of laundry detergent jingles.) I was not familiar with mad men before i read this, she gave me an interesting take on the but i would not want to watch it because it sounds like a soap opera that never ends. she does give a good description of the series.

rough draft for paper 1

Morgan Carlson

English 101

Teaching someone to read can be difficult if they are not interested in reading, i had a friend named George he was two years younger than I was. Even though, he was about two feet taller than me.

He had blonde hair and a round face and an easy going manner. We enjoyed doing lots of the same

Outdoor activities. He struggled with reading and school work in general. I was at the age where I

Was learning to read too.

I had a series of books that started off with large type and simple words. As the chapters

Progressed they increased in difficulty. The fun thing about these books was that they were all

About natural science. I learned interesting things about bugs and bees, fish and owls. I told Josh

The animal stories. He looked forward to hearing about them every time we got together. When I

Finished the easy reader I passed it on to him.

His mother was very impressed that he was now anxious to read. He worked very hard to learn

The words so he could find out about all the things I had told him.

After he finished reading the set of books he became a very good reader and he started to recommend books for me to read. Many people try to learn something by them self but they do not learn as easily as with the help of a friend.

2 many of the settings a plain home with a warm wooden floor and a very large wooden table as well as a small wood stove on the side of the room next to couches and a little table with drawings
3 vivid detail, i can describe many of the scenes,in detail like telling Jorge about animals and insects i read about in my books that he would be reading shortly after or when i was helping move fire wood and i would see a bug or small animal that i would tell Jorge about.
4.i think that a second person point of view because then i can talk about Jorge instead because this story was more about Jorge learning to read than about me

Literacy a Linage

Literacy a Linage. This essay is about how Melanie Lukens father influenced her. Every day when they went on a bike ride they stopped below the bell tower and recited classic poetry this gave her an appreciation for literacy and language. Then she went into into how she as a little girl loved being read to, reading books and acting out scenes from her favorite books.

The next part of the chapter was about how her father pushed her to read literature.  Once she began to take poetry classes and she began to improve her English abilities, her father made her keep telling her self that she was a good poet and writer.

Her main point was that she has come from a long tradition of literacy and writing in her family, and that she has been passed a love of language writing from her father.

5.       2 Audience I think that most everyone has an experience like this one
6.       3 Stance my attitude is more neutral but this book and character became one of my favorite things for many years to come once I learned to read so it is somewhat a good memory
7       4Media/Design I think that some pictures would help convey the story a little bit better
What do you see this took place in a library it was a small room and there were lots of kids reading
9      What do you hear there were many voices of little children as well as a air conditioner running
10.   What do you smell the smell of musty books and lots of people cramped in a tight little space.

17.   This was a turning point in my life because I was able to read and learn other things
My definition of thinking and acting rhetorically. Rhetoric means to be able to add your voice to conversations and be able to use what others say to promote your message. I think that a person is a good writer when they can think rhetorically. The definition of rhetoric. The art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other composition techniques. Language designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect on its audience, but often regarded as lacking in sincerity or meaningful content.
"All we have from the opposition is empty rhetoric" This means that rhetoric is just persuading someone to think like you do.

Rhetorician Susan Miller sums up why we study rhetoric: “if you want to know how power works you must understand how language works-and that’s what the study of rhetoric is all about” this points to how critical writing, reading, speaking, and listening is in everyday life of our modern civilization, so that we can tell if someone is trying to rhetorically convince us of something or telling us fact.

When writing rhetorically you have to make sure you are listening to things people say about your topic. make sure you cite your resources when writing because it makes you seem more credible.
three good sayings i have heard about with rhetoric is listen before you join in to the conversation in order to make the most impact, another saying is put your oar in meaning don't be afraid to join in to the conversation, another is give credit where credit is due it improves your accountability.

Lydia's story

Brideau’s main point came at the end of the story, her point was that despite terrible adversity Lydia had enough determination and hope to face it.

This story was narrated from a third person point of view, she used words like terrified, storm, rushing, and cramped,  this impacts you because its like you were watching Lydia struggling to survive.

Brideau’s tone was to heath care professionals, her tone was of caring for other people like (in the sun and heat, she and a larger group of other people waited without food or water)

This story is about a plumber. He was working down in the basement of a house checking pipes for leaks by putting a big rubber balloon in the drain pipe of the house to clog it,(he was not a very skilled plumber because it was the first time he had done any real plumbing before) he inflated the balloon and all worked well their were no leaks, so he went and started deflating the  balloon, then the balloon suddenly popped down on to his hand he was stuck. He fought panic as he sat in the crawl space the only thing he could do was yell for help. After awhile of waiting help finally came, his hand was getting numb.

He still could not get his out of the pipe unless they popped the balloon but the balloon was holding back all the pipes full of water in the entire house if the balloon was popped all the water would be gushing out at him. That was the only way they could get his hand out of the pipe the friend was able to pull him back after he popped the balloon and he put a cap on the pipe and the plumber felt dizzy but in the end he was able to get out of the crawl space without losing his hand. It is amazing how when people are put under pressure they act differently some panic and others are strong.

Chapter 2 (rehtorical situations)

Chapter 2 (rhetorical situations)

This chapter was telling us how to think about different rhetorical situations that we may come across as writers. Each situation has its own genre. A boss presenting a business plan would have a different approach than a student writing a blog. First, a writer would figure out the best type genre to use successfully for their audience. Tone, is considered depending on the genre and the intended audience. An example would be; if you are writing a book report, the tone would be informative, if it was a recipe you would plainly dictate the information in a straight forward way. You need to change your genre depending upon the intended audience so you can reach them effectively with your message.

Consider if your audience is informed on the topic, that way you will avoid talking down to them or not being thorough enough. If you want to reach your readers it is important to know your purpose. If for example you were trying to explain how to bake your own bread, you would be trying to convince your readers to try to bake bread.  This would be your purpose. Each genre has its own purpose.

Your stance on any given topic changes how you write. For example; if you were trying to get a specific Politian elected, you would want to be supportive and tell all the good things about them. Think about writers that have gone before you and what they have written about the topic and then form your approach most effectively by adding your own voice.

You need to choose a medium that will work the best for your circumstance, it could be digital, written, visual, etc. Each medium has some qualities that will work better than others. Digital can offer links to other information where a printed paper may only be able to offer one picture. If the writer considers all these things they will be a better communicator.
