Teaching someone to read can be difficult if they are not interested in reading, i had a friend named George he was two years younger than I was. Even though, he was about two feet taller than me.

He had blonde hair and a round face and an easy going manner. We enjoyed doing lots of the same

Outdoor activities. He struggled with reading and school work in general. I was at the age where I

Was learning to read too.

I had a series of books that started off with large type and simple words. As the chapters

Progressed they increased in difficulty. The fun thing about these books was that they were all

About natural science. I learned interesting things about bugs and bees, fish and owls. I told Josh

The animal stories. He looked forward to hearing about them every time we got together. When I

Finished the easy reader I passed it on to him.

His mother was very impressed that he was now anxious to read. He worked very hard to learn

The words so he could find out about all the things I had told him.

After he finished reading the set of books he became a very good reader and he started to recommend books for me to read. Many people try to learn something by them self but they do not learn as easily as with the help of a friend.

Characteristic Features

1 many people to tell people about my experience of how i helped my friend to read and help him on a life long journey of learning.
2 many of the settings a plain home with a warm wooden floor and a very large wooden table as well as a small wood stove on the side of the room next to couches and a little table with drawings
3 vivid detail, i can describe many of the scenes,in detail like telling Jorge about animals and insects i read about in my books that he would be reading shortly after or when i was helping move fire wood and i would see a bug or small animal that i would tell Jorge about.
4.i think that a second person point of view because then i can talk about Jorge instead because this story was more about Jorge learning to read than about me

Literacy a Linage

Literacy a Linage. This essay is about how Melanie Lukens father influenced her. Every day when they went on a bike ride they stopped below the bell tower and recited classic poetry this gave her an appreciation for literacy and language. Then she went into into how she as a little girl loved being read to, reading books and acting out scenes from her favorite books.

The next part of the chapter was about how her father pushed her to read literature.  Once she began to take poetry classes and she began to improve her English abilities, her father made her keep telling her self that she was a good poet and writer.

Her main point was that she has come from a long tradition of literacy and writing in her family, and that she has been passed a love of language writing from her father.          

Lydia's story Questions

1.       Page 130 paragraph 3 “Lydia waited on the top shelf of her linen closet, until the water began to recede.”  

2       Page 129 paragraph 1 “Interestingly, she never used the names “Katrina or Rita” when speaking about the hurricanes.

3       Page 128 paragraph 2 “Entering the large VFW hall, we were struck by the chemical odor of cleaning solution so strong that it seemed toxic. The hall had no windows only fluorescent lighting illuminated the large space.”

6.       3 Stance my attitude is more neutral but this book and character became one of my favorite things for many years to come once I learned to read so it is somewhat a good memory

      What do you see this took place in a library it was a small room and there were lots of kids reading

9      What do you hear there were many voices of little children as well as a air conditioner running

10.   What do you smell the smell of musty books and lots of people cramped in a tight little space.

11.   What I feel is a bit sad because I could not read any of the books that were all a round me

13.   Describing each person a little girl sitting on her father’s lap reading to him and my brother reading a book to a bunch of little kids in a bunny costume.

14.   Recall(or image) the little girl saying I can read to her papa

15.   What happened is I found a book about curious Jorge and sounded out each syllable in each word and learned to read

16.   If there had not been the little girl in her fathers lap I would not have been jealous and pushed my self to read.  

17.   This was a turning point in my life because I was able to read and learn other things  

      My definition of thinking and acting rhetorically. Rhetoric means to be able to add your voice to conversations and be able to use what others say to promote your message. I think that a person is a good writer when they can think rhetorically. The definition of rhetoric. The art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other composition techniques. Language designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect on its audience, but often regarded as lacking in sincerity or meaningful content.

"All we have from the opposition is empty rhetoric" This means that rhetoric is just persuading someone to think like you do.
     
  Rhetorician Susan Miller sums up why we study rhetoric: “if you want to know how power works you must understand how language works-and that’s what the study of rhetoric is all about” this points to how critical writing, reading, speaking, and listening is in everyday life of our modern civilization, so that we can tell if someone is trying to rhetorically convince us of something or telling us fact. 

  When writing rhetorically you have to make sure you are listening to things people say about your topic. make sure you cite your resources when writing because it makes you seem more credible. 
  three good sayings i have heard about with rhetoric is listen before you join in to the conversation in order to make the most impact, another saying is put your oar in meaning don't be afraid to join in to the conversation, another is give credit where credit is due it improves your accountability.

Lydia's story


Brideau’s main point came at the end of the story, her point was that despite terrible adversity Lydia had enough determination and hope to face it.    

This story was narrated from a third person point of view, she used words like terrified, storm, rushing, and cramped,  this impacts you because its like you were watching Lydia struggling to survive.

Brideau’s tone was to heath care professionals, her tone was of caring for other people like (in the sun and heat, she and a larger group of other people waited without food or water)

     This story is about a plumber. He was working down in the basement of a house checking pipes for leaks by putting a big rubber balloon in the drain pipe of the house to clog it,(he was not a very skilled plumber because it was the first time he had done any real plumbing before) he inflated the balloon and all worked well their were no leaks, so he went and started deflating the  balloon, then the balloon suddenly popped down on to his hand he was stuck. He fought panic as he sat in the crawl space the only thing he could do was yell for help. After awhile of waiting help finally came, his hand was getting numb.
 
    He still could not get his out of the pipe unless they popped the balloon but the balloon was holding back all the pipes full of water in the entire house if the balloon was popped all the water would be gushing out at him. That was the only way they could get his hand out of the pipe the friend was able to pull him back after he popped the balloon and he put a cap on the pipe and the plumber felt dizzy but in the end he was able to get out of the crawl space without losing his hand. It is amazing how when people are put under pressure they act differently some panic and others are strong.

     This chapter was telling us how to think about different rhetorical situations that we may come across as writers. Each situation has its own genre. A boss presenting a business plan would have a different approach than a student writing a blog. First, a writer would figure out the best type genre to use successfully for their audience. Tone, is considered depending on the genre and the intended audience. An example would be; if you are writing a book report, the tone would be informative, if it was a recipe you would plainly dictate the information in a straight forward way. You need to change your genre depending upon the intended audience so you can reach them effectively with your message.

     Consider if your audience is informed on the topic, that way you will avoid talking down to them or not being thorough enough. If you want to reach your readers it is important to know your purpose. If for example you were trying to explain how to bake your own bread, you would be trying to convince your readers to try to bake bread.  This would be your purpose. Each genre has its own purpose.   

    Your stance on any given topic changes how you write. For example; if you were trying to get a specific Politian elected, you would want to be supportive and tell all the good things about them. Think about writers that have gone before you and what they have written about the topic and then form your approach most effectively by adding your own voice.

     You need to choose a medium that will work the best for your circumstance, it could be digital, written, visual, etc. Each medium has some qualities that will work better than others. Digital can offer links to other information where a printed paper may only be able to offer one picture. If the writer considers all these things they will be a better communicator.
